A daring sextet directed by a young and brilliant national jazz talent as Federico Calcagno, much more than a mere promise of the Italian jazz scene. At his side, five excellent travel companions: Luca Ceribelli at soprano sax and sax tenore, Gianluca Zanello at alto sax alto, Andrea Mellace at vibraphone , Stefano Zambon at contrabass and Stefano Grasso at drums. Calcagno, leader of this enterprising team, has been defined by prestigious web magazine All about Jazz Italia “new standard bearer of italian and european jazz”. In 2017 he founded the sextet The Dolphians paying tribute to an absolute genius like Eric Dolphy, one of the most influential and representative multi-instrumentalist and composers in the history of jazz. In 2019 the group published their first disco “From Another Planet” which has been entered in the list of the best 100 albums for the famous magazine Jazzit. The main features of the sextet are the constant research of interplay and the passionate communicative intensity, with the purpose of making the spirit oEric Dolphy’s spirit hover and to retrace his way above all through a fervent improvisational creativity. Federico Calcagno, following this direction, stands out for his deep spirit of timbric and phrasing research, he is never oleographic but he is tensive and extremely interesting. This group has been a great success thanks to several prizes obtained in Italy and abroad for example: “Nuova Generazione Jazz 2021”, “Concorso Bettinardi 2021”, “MEI Superstage 2021”, “Jazz Juniors Competition 2021” (second prize). The repertoire of the concert will mainly focus on original pieces, that have been composed specifically by Federico Calcagno for the sextet, some of these are taken from From Another Planet and others compositions are completely unpublished that have never been recorded until now, all in a live between hard-bop, free, creative music, world music e hip hop that manages to capture the attention of a heterogenous and not necessary composed by jazz experts linked solely to tradition.
